Although aloe vera can grow in most regions in the USA but keeping them in too cold or too hot regions is not a good idea. winterization of the garden is necessary to help them survive during winter.
Transplanting aloe vera plants or re-potting aloe plants provides them with healthier growing conditions and sometimes recovers them from dryness or any disease.
Aloe plant repotting
We can re-pot aloe vera in two manners; from cuttings and direct plants. But it is important to figure out the right time and place for aloe vera plants to re-pot them.
Let's discuss how to safely transplant or re-pot aloe vera plants indoors and outdoors.
When to re-pot aloe vera plants?
There are multiple reasons to re-pot aloe vera plants with specific conditions and times. Following are some possible reasons and their time to re-pot aloe vera plants-
Small nursery plants can't grow faster and bigger in small cups. We should re-pot them as young plants in bigger pots to provide them with enough space and better growth.
Sometimes, aloe plants get red and black spots on their leaves. Before letting them go in the worst conditions, we re-pot their healthy cuttings in new pots.
A full-grown aloe vera plant can be re-pot with every single leaf of it.
If your plant is turning brown and getting too much and near to dying then it is better to re-pot them before it. You can know this if you see the upper portions of aloe leaves drying and turning brown.
Preparation before repotting aloe plants
Generally, we don't care about repotting soil, type of container, growing conditions, etc.
But these are the basic things for anyone to give importance to if one wants to see his/her plant in healthy conditions. Following are some things to prepare before repotting the aloe vera plants-
- Soil mixture preparation
We can't use ordinary garden soil to grow small plants or to re-pot them. It is necessary to make a fertilized and well-draining soil mixture for each plant. For aloe vera, you can use garden soil, sand, compost, and coco-peat mixture in a ratio of 2:1:1:1. It means in a soil mixture, you should add 2 portions of garden soil, 1 portion of sand, 1 of compost, and 1 of coco-peat.
Mix it in a bigger container and spray some water just before repotting the aloe plants.
- Pot selection
To re-pot aloe vera plants, containers should have proper drainage. If there are no drainage holes in containers, you should make them.
Mostly, people consider cement pots for aloe vera repotting but plastic containers are also good if you have proper drainage in them. Also, cement pots are costlier than plastic ones.
- Selection of place(indoor and outdoor)
Outdoors, aloe vera plants grow healthier and faster in the bright sunlight of 6 to 8 hours in the daytime. If sunlight is too intense, then it can tolerate a slightly shady area. It can't survive a dark place.
Indoors, if you keep it near glass windows where sunlight reaches directly, you can keep them in that room with proper air exhaust. If you keep it in deep areas in the house, then believe me it is not a good idea. If you just repotted your aloe plants, then you should keep them outdoors for a few initial days, and then you can keep them indoors.
Steps to re-pot aloe plants
If you don't know how to take cuttings then you can find many tutorials on it on various online platforms.
Let's discuss how to transplant or re-pot aloe vera plants safely in new pots-
- Repotting cuttings
Fill the soil mixture in the new bigger pots. If you want to re-pot aloe cuttings, then keep more depth in the new pot soil.
Small or big leaf cuttings need proper space in the soil and time to develop new roots. So re-pot all the cuttings in a similar manner and spray some water.
Keep your transplanted aloe plants in bright sunlight. First, these cuttings will develop roots and then they start to expand. So be patient.
- Repotting small aloe plants
If you are repotting nursery plants then keep them on the same root depth. Prepare soil mixture for it and fill it in all the new pots according to the number of plants you have.
Gently pick all the nursery plants safely and then re-pot them in new ones. Cover their roots half an inch above the soil level.
Spray some water and let them grow in bright sunlight.
In many cases, aloe vera plant leaves start to turn red color, black spots, brown spots, etc. Sometimes, these leaves become more thin and dry. In rare cases, these plant leaves start to self-melt and become very sticky outside. Also, the plant can stop growth from current growing conditions.

Overgrown aloe plants care
Overgrown aloe vera plants take a bushy form later. At this time, it becomes difficult to handle and care for them.
Following are some tips to care for overgrown aloe plants-
Truncate aloe plants
Cutting extra bushy leaves from aloe vera plants is a very basic idea to maintain them in the same pots. Cut them just above the soil surface and then either you can use them or propagate them in new pots.
Repotting aloe plants
Overgrown aloe plants repotting is not a very easy thing to do. In such conditions, these plants hold the soil tightly and you can't pick them up without breaking other leaves easily.
Sometimes, the aloe vera plant doesn't grow at height but becomes bushy on shorter heights. So, it is better to repot them instead of truncating them in such conditions.
