Spring is considered the best time and season for lawn seeding in the year.

DIY Lawn seeding in spring

Here, you will know the various aspects of seeding lawns in spring and the steps guide at a beginner level.

Seeding lawn in spring in USA

But before that, let me explain the reason for seeding a lawn in spring.

Why seeding in spring?

Just after winter stress, temperatures start to increase more habitable for living being either plants or humans. At this time, the soil doesn't feel any stress, sprouts can take time to develop their initial growth to the establishment. And also, saves plants from summer stress and arrangements to keep them alive and healthy.

Spring is the best time for seeding lawn seeds because of moderate temperature, soil conditions, the time interval for root development, and overall habitable conditions for initial growth.

It is not false that summer is too bad for seeding but in mid-summer, it becomes too difficult to keep the soil temperature low for seed germination, regular moisture, and less humidity.

Preparation before seeding a lawn

I think that's enough for you to understand the reason for lawn seeding in spring. Apart from that, you should know some other things about pure grass seeds, hybrid seeds, and the selection of the type of grass for your lawn.

Let's understand what is the preparation that you should do before and during seeding of grass seeds in lawn.

Selection of seeds

If you live in cool climate conditions where summer is not too hot and winter is too cold with snowfall, then it is always better to avoid ordinary warm climate lawn grasses.

It is good to choose lawn grass seeds like Kentucky bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Bentgrass. One more thing you can consider while selecting the seeds is that a particular grass type should be perennial. It means it should live and recover again after winter dormancy.

If you live in warm climate conditions, where summers are hot and winters are not too cold, then you can go with quality warm climate lawn grasses like Bermuda grass, St Augustine grass, Centipede, Bahiagrass, etc. Most of these warm-climate grasses are perennial and very good for lawn purposes.

The most important part comes. When you choose the seeds for your lawn whether you are a warm climate or cool climate resident, always buy high-quality seeds for your lawn. They should not be hybrid with any other lawn grass. But yes, you can mix some other seeds combined with a ratio of 5:1 of Bermuda and St Augustine for thick lawn grass.

Lawn drainage

In the end, drainage is going to be a deciding factor for your grass growth. So first, before preparing the land and soil, make drainage in the lawn. And if possible then install a subsurface irrigation system on your land.

For drainage, either you can use a subsurface drainage system or you can provide a slope to the land.

Land preparation

Here comes the most difficult part of lawn seeding; land preparation. To prepare the soil for seeding, you should check the soil pH first. If it is too acidic or too alkaline then you have to keep it from less acidic to neutral or less alkaline to neutral.

First, use an organic pre-emergent herbicide at the bottom of the soil. Cover it with a thick layer of soil. The ground level should be 5 to 6 inches above the pre-emergent layer.

Now, use natural compost or fertilizers to make the soil fertile. Try to keep the soil tillage-free. After mixing the fertilizer or compost, you need to keep the soil moist. For that, keep the soil moist every day. From the next day, you can start seeding the lawn.

Tools required

From seeding to land preparation, you need proper tools and some machines for your DIY work.

Maybe these tools will increase your cost but still, they are helpful in the long term-

  • Plowing machine
  • Dethatching reck
  • Seed spreader
  • Subsurface irrigation system
  • Spade

Steps for seeding a lawn in spring

It is not difficult for seeding a lawn even if you are a beginner and doing it yourself. Still, it is not like drinking coffee in the morning.

The following steps will help you in lawn seeding if you are stuck at some stage or initially-

Step 1- At first, select the seeds according to your need and climate as I mentioned earlier.

Step 2- Now, install a drainage system in the lawn or provide a slope to the lawn.

Step 3- Prepare the soil by using organic pre-emergents at first and then mix fertilizers to make the soil less acidic to neutral or less alkaline to neutral.

Step 4- Make the soil moist for a day and then prepare the seeds for the next day.

Step 5- Now you are at the stage of spreading seeds.

Step 6- Fill the seeds in the seed scatterer. Scatter the seeds in the entire area equally.

Step 7- Cover the spreading or use a reck to cover the seeds with the same soil.

Step 8- Don't irrigate or moist the soil till the seeds get germinate properly in the entire area.

Step 9- After seed germination, you can irrigate your lawn after one month.
