Umbrella tree trimming (USA)
I hope you know the seriousness of trimming and pruning of umbrella plant. Let's understand this in detailed steps but first, you need to know the basics. I'll start with them first.
When to trim the umbrella tree?
In the early days, an Umbrella tree or Schefflera plant grows at an ordinary growing rate until it faces any disturbance in soil fertility or any external change.
Umbrella plants need pruning and trimming from time to time to keep the plant in shape. Apart from plant decoration, trimming and pruning are important for the health of leaves and the overall plant.
Dry leaves need to be pruned and trimmed regularly. Every Schefflera category plant can produce leaves even on stem nodes despite the branches.
The best time to trim an umbrella plant is when plants feel too much stress. For that, you can do multiple other arrangements to recover plants.
Growing conditions of Umbrella plant
I'll mentioned here the basic conditions that an umbrella plant need to grow indoors. These are soil type, sunlight required, shady conditions, overall weather humidity and climate condition.
- Soil type and pH
Ordinary soil with minimum required nutrients is good if it is quite well-drained. To increase soil fertility, vermicompost and organic compost are ideal if they have a good composition of Nitrogen and carbon.
Soil pH should be between 6.1 to 6.7.
- Sunlight and shade
Outdoors, the umbrella plants can tolerate morning sunlight to just before noon. If sunlight is too intense then before noon is a good time to provide them with direct sunlight. Indoors, umbrella plants can handle direct sunlight even in the afternoon period if it is not too intense. Generally, if you keep them after a glass window, then direct sunlight of 3 to 5 hours is enough in a day.
These plants need partial light for at least 10 to 12 hours. A direct shady area is not good for a long period for umbrella plants.
- Climate and humidity
The moderately warm climate is very good for Umbrella plants. Humidity should be near 30% for initial growth. For mid-growth, it can vary from 20% to 70% and is not harmful to umbrella plants. Throughout the year, umbrella plants can tolerate temperatures between 70F to 90F. More than that is harmful to leaves and less than 40F is not good for plant health.
Tools required for trimming
In small umbrella plants, you can start trimming with limited tools and a safety kit. A pair of hand gloves, small sharp cutters, and mini plier cutter.
If you have a bigger and established thick-stem umbrella plant then you can change these tools with bigger and sharper ones.
Steps to trim umbrella tree
Although everyone consider trimming a basic process but it is not simple for umbrella plants as it is for general trimming.
Step 1- Take an inspection of the plant
Inspect your Umbrella plant stem first. Sometimes, multiple stems can create a problem while trimming the plants. When we use multiple umbrella plants combined, it becomes very problematic to distinguish the plants which need trimming and that is unwell or in stress.
On single-stem plants, if your plant has dry leaves or yellowish leaves, thick wide leaves, then be ready for trimming it.
Step 2- Be sure about the plant shape
Before starting trimming, consider a suitable shape for your plant in mind or on paper. This shape of the plant can be like bonsai or a small bushy shape.
Step 3- Ready your tools
Prepare your tools and wear safety gloves. If tools are not sharpened, then make them sharper.
Step 4- Start trimming old leaves
First, trim your older leaves on the plant. In every bunch of leaves, your branch will be principal to trim. Cut extra leaves on every branch. Trim those branches and leaves according to the shape you want.
Step 5- Make small cuts on stem nodes
On every branch and stem node, there is the possibility to produce a new branch. Use your small cutter to make a 'V' shape cut on the stem and branches. These cuts will produce new branches later.
Step 6- Trim deep if branches are thick with leaves
Use your trimmer a little deep if the plant already has too long and too long branches.
Step 7- Transplant if leaves are dying
If case leaves are getting yellowish or dry then prepare a new soil mixture to transplant them. Prepare a1 fertile soil mixture that will be well drained. Take 2:2:1 of garden soil, vermicompost, and sand mixture. Transplant these plants in a new container with this soil mixture.
