Let's understand how to make a DIY herb garden indoors with basic requirements.
DIY indoor herb garden making
For a beginner gardener, it is more challenging to make any kind of indoor garden than starting outdoor gardening from scratch. It requires basic knowledge of particular plants, common gardening skills, and some intermediate-level usage of tools.
So here, hoping you are an intermediate gardener, I'm sharing a method to make an indoor herb garden.
Is it possible to make an indoor herb garden?
With some tools, the right containers, and some adjustments, it is highly possible and chances of a successful indoor herb garden. You just need to be aware of every single plant growing condition particularly and need to adjust the light intensity accordingly.
Although, you may face some difficulties while growing different herbs at once in containers. Different herbs are different in size and shape and ask for different spaces and growing conditions. If you are considering making a full-fledged herb garden of more than 5 herbs at once, then I'll suggest you grow similar herbs in the same growing conditions if they can grow together without invasion.
An average size DIY herb garden is possible though even in vertical gardening, square-foot gardening, and small containers.
I'll suggest you grow each of them in a different container according to the space you have.
Requirements to make it
Considering you're going to grow 4 to 5 types of herbs at once in your herb garden. For that, you need specific soil mixture, tools, and containers as follows-
Tools required
- Planter tool
- Cutters
- Harvesting Knife
- Nail for drainage holes
Materials required
- Garden soil
- Vermicompost
- Sand
- Coco-peat
- Various herb seeds
Container type and size
For small-sized herbs like mint, you need wider containers. Choose a 20x15 square inches container for these herbs and it can be of any lightweight material like plastic.
For big size and wide herbs, you need small containers but they should have enough depth. Like, for coriander and fennel leaves, your container depth should be 8 to 10 inches.
So I'll suggest you if you're considering having a different herb then choose a container according to the maximum size of the herb and depth of its roots.
Most importantly, you need to place these pots in an area where you can allow drainage water and leakage. Don't forget to open drainage holes in the bottom of each container with a nail or screwdriver.
DIY method of making herb garden indoors
Step 1- Prepare potting soil mixture
This is a completely DIY method of herb garden so I'll suggest you prepare the potting soil for seed germination and further growth. For that, you need to mix garden soil, sand, and vermicompost in a ratio of 3:2:2. Sand is helpful for easy drainage which is very decisive to grow herbs in containers.
Mix the potting soil carefully and spray some fresh water for the required moisture. Fill it in each container you have for different herb seeds.
Step 2- Start sowing different herb seeds
Start sowing and propagating the small plants and seeds in suitable containers. Plants like mint grow with the section propagation method. So growing other herbs with seeds in suitable containers is very important.
Spray some water after sowing every bud, cuttings, and seed for moisture.
Step 3- Keep the herbs in bright and intense light accordingly
Some herbs need highly intense sunlight to grow but some grow in bright light. So if your outdoor sunlight is intense then keep the container near the window where light is coming directly but if not then try to keep them at least on windows and in the absence of light, provide them manual LED light.
For bright light habitable herbs, you can keep them either in LED range or provide them bright sunlight on windows if it is not direct or too intense.
Step 4- Care for different herb plants
Check the moisture of the soil in each herb container regularly and spray some water if the soil is getting dry. Don't overwater the plants even if you have good drainage because they'll waste water on the floors or room.
Don't fertilize your herbs garden plants before 3 to 4 months because it is unnecessary to disturb their natural growth rate. Provide them with light according to their need and maintain the temperature indoors. Some herbs like hot temperatures and some like moderate. Try to keep these things in mind while their mid-growth otherwise plants will start to get uncomfortable.
Step 5- Harvest as they get mature
Common herbs become ready very fast and even most of them will become ready at the same time. Don't forget that you can harvest multiple times and with some herbs for several months so don't be in a hurry while harvesting them. Use a proper harvesting knife or cutter to harvest the herb leaves clean and easily.
Does climate or growing season matter indoors?
In outdoor gardening, the climate and season of growing and harvesting matter the most. Even if you are using the right fertilizer, soil, irrigation, and care but still, the plant will hesitate to grow outdoors in odd climate conditions unless you're not growing them in greenhouses.
Indoor herb gardens depend on the atmosphere you provide them indoors which can be different from the outside season and climate. If your plants are growing in LED lights, and getting enough moisture, temperature, soil type, and fertilizers on time, then you don't need to be particular with the season.
But if your plants depend on the outside light while growing indoors, you need to be particular with the climate and season.
Without following the right climate and season of growing is a costly process to make an indoor herb or any garden. Though, it is possible to have a successful indoor garden in an odd climate and season. Better to follow the natural resources as they help plants naturally to grow at their natural growth rate.
