Step-by-step guide for bamboo fencing
Considering you've got an average size garden, I'm giving you a detailed guide on how to make it DIY at the beginner level. Even if you have a big or small garden, you can increase or decrease the bamboo height accordingly and the gap between supporting poles can be increased or decreased accordingly.
The following method is also helpful for lawns if you are thinking of a large lawn-
Step 1- Mark the perimeter of your garden
First, consider your garden boundaries 5 to 6 inches extra from the original dimensions. Now, mark the garden perimeter from outside with a color spray or whatever you got at that time.
Step 2- Dig at a certain gap and prepare cement
Considering you've got a medium-sized garden, you need a 5 to 6 feet height enough for a vegetable and flower garden. You need to fix some supporting poles around the boundary, for that, certain gap maintenance is important. First, dig 1.5 to 2 feet at all four corners and then make multiple digs according to the width and length of the garden. Maintain a gap of 2 to 2.5 meters between the two poles.
Step 3- Fix the supporting poles
Now, fix all your vertical supporting wooden poles in each dig and fill them with cement. If you don't know how to prepare a cement mixture then you can use stones to fill the dig to tighten the stability of the poles. Beat the rounded stones in the digs and cover them with the soil over them.
Step 4- Make it more stable with horizontal thick wood strips
To make it more stable, you need to fix the horizontal thick wood strips in the mid-sections of the poles. These strips connect each pole and provide horizontal stability to the fencing. For a medium-sized lawn, you just need two to three horizontal strips in each pole. Fix them with suitable nails and hammers, and confirm their strength again.
Step 5- Slice your bamboo in half
Now, your outline of bamboo fencing is ready. Next, you need to fix bamboo vertically all over the boundary. For that, you need to slice the bamboo in half and keep its height about 5 to 6 feet according to fencing, though you can increase the height 3 to 4 inches above so that later you can cut them and avoid any short bamboo. Use a blade to slice from top to bottom in two pieces. Take medium-thick bamboo and slice them in half.
Remove the nodes from the inside of the bamboo and rub them with sand paper to avoid any further wood injury.
Step 6- Start fixing half-sliced bamboo on each side
So you have now bamboo sliced prepared. Ready your screwdriver drill and screws ready to fix the bamboo on the fencing. Start one by one with each bamboo, place vertically, and fix three screws in each bamboo at the right spot of horizontal wooden strips support. Later, you can increase the number of screws in each bamboo that will be pinned in the direct poles.
Repeat this process in the entire boundary fencing of poles.
Step 7- Make horizontal bamboo support again with bamboo
Though people just leave the bamboo fencing here for more stability of bamboo fencing, you can add more horizontal support of bamboo this time from outside just to confirm its final strength. It's optional in small gardens and but you can confirm it in bigger lawns and gardens.
Precautions with bamboo fencing for beginners
- Wear safety gloves and glasses while using sharp tools to slice the bamboo. Don't slide your hands on roughly sliced bamboo without using sand paper.
- Check the loose bamboo fixed in the fencing after fixing them at once.
- Don't use single-piece bamboo in your fencing otherwise, it'll be so difficult to bind them and increase the unnecessary number of bamboo usage.
- Always install fencing 5 to 6 inches extra from the boundaries of the original size of the garden or lawn.
