Raised bed lasagna gardening Method and tips in USA

In the least fertile soil regions, gardening becomes a very difficult thing to practice. To make gardening possible, we prepare a soil mixture that contains compost, manure, soil, sand, and other coco-peat-like organic materials. But after a while, this mixture becomes less effective and low fertile for future gardening.

We can do gardening but every time we need proper preparation for this. Things become worst when weeds and pests attack the garden plants.

What is lasagna gardening?

The Lasagna gardening method is an organic gardening method in which we practice cultivation by making layers of organic materials like cardboard, dry leaves, grass clippings, newspaper, compost, and soil.

Simply, it is a kind of mulching of different layers of organic materials on each other. A time later, these organic materials turn into high-quality, fertile, and productive decomposed organic material.

  • Organic materials required

Grass clippings, compost, organic kitchen waste, chicken manure, cow dung compost, dry leaves, etc.

Other than that, you need cardboard and newspapers to make a layer of it at the bottom.

You also need some ordinary garden soil in this container of layers.

  • Safety kit

PPE kit, or at least hand gloves, long boots, face mask, and head cover.

Making Lasagna gardening in raised beds

To prepare Lasagna gardening in raised beds, you should make sure about the right season, materials, ratio, and layering of the materials.

Non-organic materials are not as helpful as required in Lasagna gardening.

Following are the steps to make Lasagna gardening in raised beds-

  • Making wooden container

First, you need a strong wood container to fill the organic materials in it. The size of the wooden container depends on your need. If it changes size with load and has stress, you should avoid it.

Either you can make multiple small and wide containers or you can have bigger ones. You can make drainage at the bottom of this container and side walls as well.

  • Making layers

The layer-making process is not the random filling of organic materials in the containers. It should be well layered with particular organic materials. Even you can make lasagna layers with some daily household organic waste.

First of all, you need to layer cardboard or newspaper at the bottom of the container. This layer can be 1 inch thick. Now follow the steps-

Step 1- Either take market compost or any other animal dung manure. Layer it above the cardboard or newspaper layer. Keep this manure layer slightly thicker than the cardboard layer.

Step 2- Now take the dry grass clippings of any grass(completely dry). Make a layer of it over the organic manure. This grass clipping layer can be 2 inches thick and easily available through lawns in your neighborhood.

Step 3- Cover the grass clippings with organic compost. This organic compost can be a mixture of daily household organic waste of vegetables, fruits, and other organic stuff. This layer can be thickest till now.

Step 4- Again, take dry grass clippings and cover the entire material with them. This time, you can make a slightly thin layer of grass clippings.

Step 5- Make a layer of organic animal dung manure. Make this layer 2 inches above the grass clipping layer.

Step 6- Again, use organic compost and make a layer of 1 inch with it.

Step 7- Now, make a thin layer of grass clippings on it and this time you can keep it thinnest.

Step 8- Take garden soil and make a thin layer of it above the grass clipping layer.

Step 9- Cover garden soil with animal dung manure. You can use a rack to spread it in the container.

Step 10- Finally make a layer of organic layer on the top.

  • Spraying water

Now you set the layering of almost every required organic material. One thing you are missing in it is moisture.

So to moisten the entire bed, you need to spray some water on it.

Precautions while lasagna gardening in raised beds

It is not as straightforward as it is looking now. There are many precautions and steps to take before and during making this in raised beds.

Following pre and post-precautions will help you to make sure you are not mistaking and are careful while practicing it-

  • Make sure that your neighbor never used non-organic fertilizers or weed removals in their lawns. If they did, your lasagna gardening layers may get affected by it.
  • Keep using a recking tool to spread the organic materials all around the corners equally. It will also help you to make the process easier.
  • Use a long thin material rod to pinch it to the bottom to release the overall tension. Repeat this after every layer you make in the container.
  • Wear a PPE kit or at least hand gloves and a face mask. You don't want to be injured or the unwanted dust in your mouth and bacteria in your hands.
  • Don't make it in the rainy season in an open area. It should be either in spring or early summer to get the best from it.

How good is the lasagna raised bed method?

Well, it is not bad in any case at all. Specifically, in the least soil fertility areas, it is very helpful in gardening and ordinary plant farming. You could have a very good harvest of vegetables like onions, peas, tomatoes, kale, cabbage, cerely, etc.

Although, you need proper preparation for it which makes it distinct from other methods of gardening. One of the major advantages of it is that you can make it with simple easily available organic materials and you don't need to spend on chemical fertilizers or weed killers.

It is highly productive, fertile, and organic for any kind of garden vegetable or fruit with the least investment. It is also the least weed-encouraging method in gardening. And you can keep away insects, pests, and weeds through this method and can have a healthy organic garden in it.

Without precautions, you can make blunders with this method.
