Florida contributes the largest sugarcane yield in a year in the entire United States. Sugarcane cultivation part a large percentage in the economy of Florida.
Because there are multiple methods of sugarcane farming, their number of cuttings and plants is different in per acre land, and production as well.
Sugarcane Yield, investment, and Profit in Florida
For a new farmer, it is difficult to determine or estimate the investment, yield, and profit margin per acre of land in the USA, especially in Florida.
Here, we estimated the average production of sugarcane per acre of land so we can estimate its investment cost, production, and profit per acre of land.
Sugarcane yield per acre in Florida
Sugarcane yield depends on the method one uses during sowing. So the number of plants can vary according to the method and land.
Following is an average data on yield per acre land on sugarcane farming in Florida-
- Number of plants per acre- 80,000 to 85,000
- Line-to-line distance- 20 cm
- Plant-to-plant distance- 18 cm
- Yield per square meter- 22 kg to 25 kg
- Yield per acre- 90 to 110 tons
Sugarcane investment cost per acre
Sugarcane investment can vary, depending on management and methods. But still, the cost variation is not more than 5%.
Following is an estimation of sugarcane farming investment cost per acre of land-
- Sugarcane cuttings cost- $150
- Fertilizers cost- $200
- Irrigation cost- $400
- Machine cost- $400
Total cost- $1,070 to $1,100
Sugarcane profit per acre in Florida(USA)
Sugarcane profit depends on multiple factors; the method used, fertilizers used, proper care of plants, etc.
Following is an estimation of profit per acre of land in Florida on sugarcane cultivation-
- Weight of sugarcane per acre- 90 to 110 tons
- The market price of sugarcane- $32/ton
- The total market price of sugarcane- $2,880 to $3,520
- Transportation cost- $500
Overall profit on sugarcane per acre- $1,200/acre to $1,280/acre
Some other profitable crops in Florida, USA are soybeans, grapefruit, cucumber, peanuts, bell peppers, sweetcorn, tomatoes, Strawberries, oranges, etc.
When to plant sugarcane in Florida?
In Florida, August last or just before starting the fall season is a good time to start a sugarcane plantation. This growing period can range to the first week of January.
On average, it takes almost a year to harvest sugarcane in Florida but some farmers harvest it early in 10 to 11 months period.
During this period, south Florida has the ideal conditions for sugarcane cultivation.
Why is sugarcane important to Florida?
Well, there are many reasons for the importance of sugarcane for Florida. Having the largest producer of sugarcane in the entire United States, Florida produces some quality sugarcane. The following points describe the importance of sugarcane in Florida-
Making sweet products
The basic purpose of sugarcane cultivation is to get raw sweet material to make sugar, jaggery, juice, and other sweet products.
Florida produces over 16 million tons of sugarcane in the entire USA.
For farmers
Although sugarcane cultivation can be under contract farming but still local farms in the USA practices sugarcane farming on a very large scale extensively. It is a very profitable business for local farmers in Florida. Every year they generate a profit of $1,200 to $1,280 per acre of land.
Sugarcane agriculture has one of the largest percentages of cultivation during this period in the entire United States.
Renewable resource
In some countries, sugarcane waste uses as a renewable energy resource of biomaterials. Although it produces a large amount of fog still it is better than some non-renewable energy resources.
After squeezing all the juice from the sugarcane, a large dead organic mass was left. This organic mass can be used as biofuel after drying. Because Florida produces a very large sugarcane yield, they've left huge organic biomass that they use as biofuel.
Bioethanol from sugarcane
Sugarcane waste also can use to make bioethanol. A very useful renewable energy source sugarcane bioethanol is very useful in gasoline.
Sugarcane bioethanol is cheaper and low-carbon-producing biofuel.
Extensive agriculture
Although big heavy machines reduce the manpower for sugarcane cultivation it saves time. But still, on an extensive level, sugarcane cultivation needs manpower to handle the entire cultivation.
Steps of sugarcane crop production
There are both traditional and modern methods of sugarcane crop production. In traditional methods, we grow non-sprouted sugarcane cuttings horizontally in the line. In modern methods, we first prepare nursery bends and then follow further-
Step 1- First, we prepare soil beds to sprout sugarcane cuttings. For that, we mix soil, compost, and coco-peat in 1:1:1.
Step 2- Next step is to fill this soil in cups and then clean the sugarcane cuttings. According to the nodes of sugarcane cuttings, cover them in the soil in portions. Spray some water on each bed.
Step 3- Keep these beds in partial shade and even sunlight. After 10 to 15 days, these cuttings start sprouting in these soil beds. Now, these cuttings are ready to sow in fields.
Step 4- Prepare the fields rows and columns according to the method you will use for cultivation.
Step 5- Now, on a certain gap, we sow these sprouts in the soil and cover them with soil just below the green portions.
Step 6- Irrigate the soil if the soil is not enough moist.
Step 7- Now, keep the irrigation regular and you need to fertilize these sugarcane plants later.
Step 8- After a couple of mid-fertilization, your sugarcane will become ready for harvesting.
Thus, there are multiple methods of sugarcane crop production but it depends on the size of the land and its purpose.
