In most warm regions in the USA, often people want to know about the comparison of both Zoysia grass and Bahiagrass(paspalum notatum) but because of lots of similarities, they get confused to decide which one is best for their lawns.
Although, with some other lawn turfs, people take these grasses as weeds sometimes it is not bad to have a whole of such grasses.
Here, we discussed almost every valid point of comparison between Zoysia grass and Bahiagrass.
Zoysia grass Vs Bahiagrass
Before comparing both turfs, let's first understand why people often choose grasses like Zoysia and Bahiagrass and the thing that why these are different than Crabgrass and dallisgrass. Climate may be a reason, maintenance work, weather-friendly, perennial or annual, are some reasons for those who want to keep their lawns simple with no regular maintenance.
The following factors will help you to understand which grass is best for your lawn-
Identification
With the following points, you can identify Zoysia grass and Bahiagrass-
Zoysia grass
- Color- Light green to dark green
- Nature- Invasive in nature
- Scientific name- Zoysia japonica
- Maximum height- 1.2 feet
- Leaves- Fine textured bladed leaves
Bahiagrass
- Color- Only green while growing period
- Nature- Highly invasive(even invade weeds sometimes)
- Scientific name- Paspalum Notatum
- Maximum height- 1.5 feet
- Leaves- Longer blade leaves with a smooth texture
Traffic handling capacity
Only a few types of grass can handle heavy foot traffic and they have some special either in their roots, rough growth, thickness, etc. Some popular traffic-handling grasses are Tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and bermudagrass.
Zoysia grass
Zoysia Grass can handle heavy foot traffic easily. In small lawns, it maybe takes some time to recover but for bigger lawns, it is quite spectacular for handling foot traffic.
Bahiagrass
Because Bahiagrass grows with thick stolons, it becomes more comfortable to take daily walking traffic on whole lawns.
It is good for daily yoga, walking, skipping, and pet walking on lawns.
Performance in cool regions
It is still a concern to have an odd climate lawn grass in your yard. I'm not saying you can't grow but why do you create trouble for yourself if you can go with simple climate-friendly lawn grass with similar advantages? It's been always better to have either high maintenance or at least the same climate lawn turf.
Zoysia grass
Zoysia grass can't survive in cool seasons for most of the time except for a few weeks in summer. It can survive in summer doesn't mean that it will get its peak in summer. Cool seasons are not comfortable for Zoysia grass.
With the cool season, temperature, humidity, and soil temperature matter in the case of zoysia grass. Mostly, the temperature falls drastically in a cool climate after the season change. Zoysia Grass can't handle this sudden change as well. To help it recover after winter you need to care for Zoysia grass during winter.
Bahiagrass
Like Zoysia grass, Bahiagrass also can't survive the cool season. You can think about its dormancy period in winter but because temperatures keep low even in summer of a cool climate, it becomes almost impossible to grow Bahiagrass.
Despite, the very rough grass, climate adjusts always lacking with Bahiagrass.
Performance in the warm and hot seasons
Warm climates are always good for most lawn grasses. But hot summer can also impact negatively such grasses.
If the temperature goes above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, it creates discomfort for turf no matter what its nature of growth is.
Zoysia grass
Zoysia grass is a warm climate grass. It can grow in temperature between 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit in summer easily. In later periods of the year, Zoysia grass gets one last peak in late summer and then starts to move towards dormancy.
Despite growing in average intense sunlight, Zoysia grass can't handle trees and shrubs' shade for longer periods.
Bahiagrass
Bahiagrass is also a warm and hot climate lawn grass. It can handle slightly higher temperatures than Zoysia grass.
Bahiagrass grows better in full sunlight and can handle partial shade.
During winter, Bahiagrass goes in dormancy for the entire season. Because of its perennial nature, it appears in spring again and takes some time to recover.
Maintenance
Fertilization, mowing, weeding, irrigation, overseeding, and aeration, are points that tell you about the maintenance of any lawn turf. If you don't need to do so many things among these, then your grass has low maintenance.
Zoysia grass
With an average water requirement regularly, Zoysia grass can grow in the least water conditions in the warm season. It can handle drought for some time and doesn't die. But forgetting drought handling, it is always good to keep irrigation regular to get the best results.
It doesn't need per quarter or annual half fertilization for the entire year.
Sometimes it increases your maintenance time and cost when weeds invade Zoysia lawns.
Zoysia grass doesn't need mowing before becoming 5 to 6 feet tall. Whenever it becomes taller you can mow it. On average, keep Zoysia grass mowing every 10 to 14 days.
You can keep aerating your lawn every year if grass growth is slightly late or unwell.
Do it in late summer or early fall.
Bahiagrass
Bahiagrass grass shows its roughness when it grows in the least moisture in summer. Because of its deep roots, it can't hesitate to invade other weeds. Bahiagrass is one of those few types of grass that overshadow other weeds and grasses.
It makes its maintenance very low. Despite growing in the least water conditions, you should keep irrigation quite regular to get its peak.
Bahiagrass mowing can be slightly late but keep it at least every 12 to 15 days. It doesn't need aeration because of its growth rate. Once in two years, you can aerate your Bahiagrass lawn either in late summer or early fall.
Soil type and pH
Every lawn turf needs a particular kind of soil. If you keep soil type and pH odd for lawn turfs, then either it may not grow or it will get lawn moss and weeds with it.
Zoysia grass
Zoysia grass grows in slightly acidic to neutral grass. If your soil pH is less than 6 then it can create problems like lawn moss, weeds, etc.
Zoysia grass can grow in any type of well-drained soil in the lawn.
Bahiagrass
Bahiagrass grows better in organically acidic soil. the pH of such soils should be between 4.9 to 6.1. In extreme cases, it shouldn't be higher than 6.3 for Bahiagrass otherwise grass will start to change color and convert from light green to yellowish grass.
