DIY method of Growing Mondo grass in yard in USA

For lawn landscaping, borders, and garden outline, Mondo grass is one of the best choices. We can't call it a type of grass or a weed.

Mondo grass is a very low-maintenance choice to border a lawn and outline it. It grows well in warm climate conditions. It is invasive with a slow growth rate.

Here, I'm going to explain to you the method and requirements of growing Mondo grass in your lawn and garden.

Growing Mondo grass in yard

Mondo grass is an evergreen perennial invasive in nature that grows with a shiny texture.

Before starting the process and step guide I want you to at least take a brief on the identification of Mondo grass.

Growing Mondo grass in USA

Identification of Mondo grass

By comparing the following things in the backyard or common landscape, you can easily identify Mondo grass in your lawn and garden-

  • Leaves- Long and multiple
  • Color- Dark green to a common green
  • Shape- Like spider plant, crabgrass
  • Nature- Evergreen perennial and invasive
  • Size- 1 foot

Requirements to grow

The following are the basic requirement to grow Mondo grass-

Soil type

In many places, garden soil is enough for growing Mondo grass but still, you need to fertilize it enough for the initial growth. Garden soil+vermicompost+Sand is a very good mixture for Mondo grass in a certain ratio. Soil should be well drained and less muddy for Mondo grass.

Temperature and humidity

In warm climates, temperature above 95F in summer is not comfortable with direct sunlight. If sunlight is bright and Mondo grass is in partial shade, then it is helpful for them even in higher temperatures. In winter, snowfall and temperatures less than 45F are bad for them.

Throughout the year, humidity change from 10% to 50% is very common.

Irrigation

You don't need extra water irrigation for Mondo grass even in hot summer. Providing moisture on the daily basis is very helpful and common. You can reduce it on cool days and moderate temperature days.

Tools required

You don't need many tools to propagate and develop Mondo grass but still, important tools are as follows-

  • Small cultivator tools
  • Safety gloves
  • Spade
  • Plant trimmers
  • Spraying bottles

Common fertilizers

Vermicompost and Organic biomass waste material decomposed compost are very common fertilizers for the growth of Mondo grass in lawns and gardens. These are not bad at all and help to keep the Mondo grass healthy in its slow growth.

Steps to grow Mondo grass

Here, I'm going to tell you how to propagate the Mondo grass from clumps-

Step 1- Take the Clumps of Mondo grass and keep them in bright sunlight with slightly more moisture than required.

Step 2- Prepare the soil mixture where you want to grow Mondo grass. For that, if you have less fertile garden soil then make a mixture of 2:2:1 of garden soil, sand, and vermicompost respectively.

Step 3- Make a slope in the landscape or the place where you want to grow it. You don't need drainage if you have a well-drained soil mixture prepared.

Step 4- Now, remove the compactness of the soil and prepare it for Mondo grass transplantation. Use a small cultivator tool to make it loose.

Step 5- On a certain gap of 10 to 12 centimeters, you have to plant the Mondo grass.

Step 6- Now separate the certain multiple roots from the clumps(around 4 to 5). Overmoisture will help you here which I suggested you do in starting. It will help you to separate.

Step 7- Start transplantation of Mondo grass in your landscape or garden.

Step 8- Spray some water to provide some moisture.

Thus, you can transplant Mondo grass from pots to the ground. It is a very simple process even for beginners.

After that follow the tips to take care of your Mondo grass further.

Tips to take care of Mondo grass

I want to give you some personal tips to take care of Mondo grass as follows-

  • Trim once in 2 month

Because of slow growth, even if you are growing it on a lawn, mowing or trimming Mondo grass is not similar to lawn grass. Although you mow your lawn generally every 10 to 15 days trimming of Mondo grass should be in every 2 months and a week more than that.

  • Irrigate regularly in summer

Irrigate your Mondo grass whenever you find dry soil or less moisture. Check it with your fingertips and then spray water or irrigate accordingly. In general cases, Mondo grass irrigation is suitable every day in hot summer. For moderate temperature days, it should be twice a week.

  • Fertilize thrice a year

Fertilize your Mondo grass with vermicompost or organic compost thrice a year. If you are growing it in pots then you need only a few cups of compost. The first fertilization should be in late spring, then late summer, and then in fall.

  • Drainage is important

Drainage of Mondo grass is very important to save it from dying and rotting roots. Overmoisture can be a reason for plants dying especially in winter. Even after its evergreen perennial nature, Mondo grass can die easily in bad drainage conditions.

Either make a slope in the landscape or install proper drainage.

  • Don't allow heavy foot traffic

Don't consider it as a lawn grass. It can't handle heavy foot traffic while growing at the borders and landscape. Heavy foot trafficking should be avoided for Mondo grass.

Mistakes while growing Mondo grass

Even after detailed training, beginners may do some common mistakes while growing Mondo grass. These mistakes can be very problematic and serious sometimes. Let's take a look-

  • Wrong season for growing

The best time to start growing and transplantation of Mondo grass is late spring. From this time, the temperature starts to rise and conditions are very suitable for mondo grass. If plants get damaged then they can take longer and more comfortable time for this.

Beginners sometimes take it lightly. They try to grow and transplant Mondo grass in the winter and rainy seasons. Which is completely wrong. Because of this, you can slow down the growth rate and in the worst cases, Mondo grass gets dies.

  • Overplaying with the mondo grass

People touch their shiny garden plants and grass regularly to take a feel. This thing is very bad when you play with them regularly. Mondo grass doesn't like overplaying with a human touch. So they become sensitive to it and it impacts their growth negatively.

  • Ignoring drainage

People ignore the drainage of Mondo grass while propagating in pots and transplantation in landscapes over wide distances. This can be very cruel to these plants. Beginners do this mistake several times.

  • Using growth booster

In the initial days, people get upset with the slow growth rate of Mondo grass. They take it as a wrong sign which is completely wrong. They start using market-available plant growth boosters. This changes the cycle of the Mondo grass.

  • Careless transplantation

Like snake plants, it is easy to propagate the Mondo grass with the nodes. But transplantation, carelessness, and roughness with Mondo grass are very bad for their further growth.

Clusia Hedge trimming method and guide for beginners in USA

Clusia hedges are evergreen shrubs that improve the atmosphere of your landscape and lawns. This hedge looks shiny green and needs very little maintenance throughout the year. But letting Clusia hedges grow without trimming and pruning is not helpful to avoid diseases, overgrowth, unnecessary plant energy use, and imbalance of the shrub. Crabgrass Vs Dallisgrass in USA and weed comparison in lawn

We can use an annual grass-looking weed in a lawn for short-term periods. It is quite beneficial too because of its invasive, similar-looking, and low-maintenance nature.  Crabgrass is one of those few weed types of grass that looks like st Augustine and can work the same as lawn turf for short periods.
