Heavenly bamboo has a few other name as sacred bamboo and Nandina. It is an evergreen shrub that is considered a good shrub in a lawn if you can maintain it. It's a very low-maintenance shrub but because of its invasive nature, you have to take care of it from time to time. It expands with rhizomes so you can understand how fast it can invade a space.
The bamboo term doesn't symbolize here that it looks like bamboo or that its stem is like bamboo.
It can live up to 120 years with limited resources. But this is not it. It has some very serious concerns that I'll discuss further.
Let's understand how to take care of Heavenly bamboo shrubs.
Heavenly bamboo care in the USA
Heavenly bamboo care is easy but needs some attention in odd seasons. It doesn't ask you for regular fertilization or irrigation once it gets established but you shouldn't ignore the important points of this shrub which fruits are poisonous.
But before I give you a brief guide on it, let's understand some basics of it.
Identification of heavenly bamboo

Best growing conditions for Heavenly bamboo
- Soil type

- Temperature and climate
In winter, it can handle the temperature up to 30F in cool climates but in warm climates, it can remain alive at 35F in winter. During the summer in cool regions, it can handle temperatures up to 60F and in warm climates, it can handle 80F easily.
Although, in cool climate regions, it goes into dormancy in some cases.
- Irrigation
Heavenly bamboo required regular irrigation till the rhizome root system establishment. After it's done, you can make it more comfortable with less irrigation as well.
- Sunlight and shade
It prefers to be in direct sunlight mostly. If the temperature is too hot in summer, make sure to provide enough irrigation. In overcast weather, it can grow well with less irrigation. It doesn't like too long a shady atmosphere in a day.
Bright sunlight is also effective for heavenly bamboo shrubs.
- Flowering
Heavenly bamboo flowering starts in the spring season. It will follow it every year till its life of 80 to 120 years. It doesn't escape any year between its life span until it is in the worst conditions. It produces tiny white flowers in a bunch on every twig.
Guide to take care heavenly bamboo
You don't need to take care of heavenly bamboo as you do with houseplants. These are tough shrubs and don't need sensitive attention. It will be enough if you care about it according to the season.
Let's understand how you should do that-
- Pruning Heavenly bamboo
Pruning is necessary to restrict and keep the heavenly bamboo shrub in shape. It doesn't grow with a single stem as other shrubs and trees grow. Because of growing with rhizomes, it is invasive and has multiple stems.
Pruning unnecessary or ugly-looking stems and branches helps to improve the shape and maintain it for longer and easier. You can bind all the stems with a rope or a wire to hold them all together.
- Irrigation timings
In spring, you can irrigate a new plant regularly till the late summer. This will help that to establish the roots. If the shrub is already established, then you can keep irrigation once a week in spring. Twice or thrice a week in summer and during winter, once in 10 to 15 days.
- Fertilization
You can use vermicompost or organic compost for fertilization of heavenly bamboo shrubs. You can do it in early spring to mid-summer once and then in fall once.
- Controlling invasion
To control invasion in the entire lawn or garden, you need to cut the extra rhizomes from the roots. You can transplant them at a new place separately. But the fact is, it will still start to invade space till its life. So don't worry about it. Just trim and prune the extra rhizomes from time to time.
Don't use manual shrub killers to restrict rhizomes. It may impact badly to the whole shrub.
Don't consume the fruits of heavenly bamboo
The common fruit of this variety of shrub is light red berries. These berries are not edible at all because of their poisonous nature for humans, birds, and animals. It may be a death threat for many living beings if they consume it.
Don't even consume the flowers of it. When the time will come, these fruits will fall automatically. Just stay away from your pets from there. Don't even consume them by mistake as most people consider them ordinary fresh berries.
