But before that, I want you to know the basic identification of Eastern Redbud and the nature of growing.

Eastern redbud tree pros and cons

  • Plant type- Bushy shrub
  • Flowers- A bunch of tiny flowers
  • Life span- 50 to 60 years
  • Color- Pink
  • Shape- Bushy
  • Size- Height 9 feet max

Pros of Eastern Redbud shrubs

  • Can tolerate drought in the worst

In the worst dry conditions, even though these plants may hesitate the flower bloom but they don't get die easily. They can handle drought for a couple of weeks. Although you will see a flower bloom rarely in such cases but till the arrangement of water, they can hold up.

  • Longer blooming

Even after one bloom in a year, Eastern redbud flowers can bloom for longer periods compared to other flowers. Whereas other flowers bloom only overnight, for 2 or 3 days, and 1 week maximum. But Eastern redbud flowers can bloom longer for 2 to 3 weeks easily in good moisture conditions.

  • Medical uses of roots

Although I'm talking about the life of Eastern redbuds they are as good as they look for medical uses. Their roots have some magnificent medical uses in vomiting, allergies, etc.

  • Size of flowers

These Eastern redbud shrubs are medium in size but their flowers are very small in size. They bloom in bunches with very small petals on the tree which looks very eye-catching.

  • Bees and butterflies

When these flowers start blooming, you will see beautiful butterflies around the shrub and bees. This looks very natural and peaceful for the mind to see such scenes at the time of flower blooming.

Conc of Eastern redbud shrubs

Spring blooming only

The complaining thing with Eastern redbud shrubs is that their flowers bloom only in spring for just a couple of weeks. After the flower stop blooming, they will appear in the following spring next year.

  • Bugs appearance

Sometimes, bugs get attracted to these shrubs very easily. It can be very bad for you if these are closer to your door or windows. Even they can come inside the house if the Easter redbud trees are slightly far.

  • Need too much water

I said earlier that they can tolerate drought but to bloom their flower and keep the shrubs healthy, you need regular water irrigation for Eastern redbuds. Flowers bloom only if you have enough moisture in the soil and the tree is in healthy condition.

  • Slippery surface after flower fall

When the Eastern redbud flowers fall after blooming, they can create some problems in cleaning them. These fallen flowers start melting quickly. So it becomes a concern to remove them as soon as possible.

Are these annual or perennial shrubs?

These Eastern redbud flower shrubs are perennial and can live up to 50 to 60 years. You will be surprised that these flowers only bloom for just 2 to 3 weeks in a season for the entire year. Only you will see these flowers blooming from mid-March to April.

For every winter, they go into dormancy and then follow the same cycle again. Initially, these flowers remain pods and when the time comes, they bloom for a couple of weeks.

Growing time for these perennial Eastern Redbud plants is very easy from spring to late summer.

Is it bad to grow Eastern redbud in the backyard?

Finally, I want to conclude here about the Eastern redbud shrubs. These are good-looking flowers in your lawn or backyard but they have some serious concerns as well. The problem becomes bigger when you sit near the shrub. Bees and bugs can bite you which is not good for you at all.

Apart from bees and bugs, the rest is good with Eastern redbuds. Just irrigate them on regular basis and enjoy the shrubs with low maintenance.

You can have these shrubs in your backyard but for that, you should confirm again the pros and cons as I clearly mentioned here.
