Juniper bonsai trees become bushy and not groom well without pruning and trimming for a long time. One thing that I can agree with you gardeners is that it is quite different and slightly difficult to prune Juniper bonsai at the right time and at the right points.
Beginners do mistakes as they prune without trimming specific twigs, branches, and leaves. It can be very bad for Juniper Bonsai to cut random sections. For better grooming, you need to reconsider the method and specific sections for pruning.
Pruning Juniper bonsai tree
The problem with Juniper bonsai increases when leaves start to get dry and brown. The wrong pruning method can enforce the entire tree's focus on strange sections or pruning will not work. Let's understand why a juniper bonsai tree needs pruning and when to prune it every year.
Why prune Juniper bonsai?
Let's see some of the essential reasons for pruning a Juniper bonsai tree at home-
- For grooming and better shape
Regular and irregular growth of branches and foliage can give a plant an irregular shape as it grows in the direction of the sun. Apart from that, too many branches can't let the whole plant groom well and it becomes difficult for it to get a stable shape.
Pruning help in such cases and help to shape and groom better the juniper bonsai tree.
- To focus on the main sections
Upper branches and foliage restrict the sunlight for the bottom section foliage and under twigs foliage. The plant mainly focuses on the new foliage and twigs but they become useless if upper leaves barred the sunlight for them. Thus, the plant wastes its focus on those branches that are not going to develop enough.
To overcome this situation, we focus to trim and prune such small twigs and foliage to shift the plant's focus to the other bigger branches that have sunlight access.
- To manage the excessive foliage
To manage the excessive foliage, we trim them in a lateral cut and shape so that the plant doesn't shift its balance and gets well-shaped trimmed sections for growing further.
- To remove the dry and dead branches
Dead branches and dry foliage look ugly on green juniper bonsai trees. It happens after the winter season when some sections don't get proper recovery and treatment on time.
Although they don't affect much to the other leaves but don't match with the other foliages enough. So pruning dead branches and foliage is not bad for juniper bonsai trees at all.
When to prune Juniper bonsai?
Now, we know the proper reasons for pruning and trimming the Juniper bonsai tree but do you know when to start its pruning? Well, you don't need to worry about that because, like most Bonsai trees, we start pruning from early spring to mid-summer. This duration gives enough time to the juniper bonsai plant to shift focus on the other sections which got ignored while producing new twigs and foliages.
Apart from spring to summer, fall is not a good season for pruning juniper bonsai trees. Don't prune your juniper bonsai tree either in fall or winter even if you are in a hot climate or cool climate.
Method of pruning Juniper bonsai
Step 1- Inspection of Juniper bonsai tree
So your first task is to figure out all the dead and dried branches, twigs, and foliage. After that, identify all the under branches developing twigs and foliages. Those are not going to get full growth in time because of sunlight restriction by upper foliage and branches. So you've got a task to remove or prune these under twigs.
Step 2- Prepare your tools to prune juniper bonsai
Check the sharpness of the pruning or trimming tools and wear safety gloves at least to protect your hands. If you don't have any of the tools then you can use a kitchen sharp kitchen Knife or scissors to remove the twigs and branches. Before starting your pruning and trimming Juniper bonsai, you can place a cloth to collect the trimmed twigs and leaves from the plant.
Step 3- Start trimming and pruning the targeted foliages
Start pruning the targeted dead and dried branches, twigs, and foliage as I suggested above. Don't cut any extra branches or don't damage the stem or other wood sections of the tree,
Step 4- Remove under-cover branches and twigs from juniper bonsai
Now, remove the other minor branches and twigs of the Juniper bonsai tree carefully. In this pruning, most people do the mistake of removing random branches which is not good for tree growth at all. So keep in mind that it hardly takes 2 to 3 hours to remove all these small twigs under the branches and don't be in hurry.
Step 5- Trim outer foliages partially to get a proper shape
Finally, you can now shape your Juniper bonsai tree by trimming the outer excessive leaves from the tree. For that, use a manual scissor and start a lateral cut to the outer parts of the foliages. Don't cut them directly with the twig or branches but just a minor trimming at the edges. Shape the juniper bonsai tree according to the shape in your mind.
Step 6- Collect the cut waste of leaves and wood
In the end, collect all the trimmed and pruned twigs, branches, and foliage and clean the Juniper bonsai tree container. Keep the regular maintenance of irrigation, fertilization, and soil health regularly.
