Pruning Tomato plants in garden
Although people do common mistakes while pruning and trimming tomato plants that can ruin the whole tomato plant. It is very common for beginners to know the right method of pruning and the correct method to prune.
Let's understand pruning for tomato plants first and then I'll share my tips to prune a tomato plant.
Why prune tomato plants
Every time tomato plants produce tomatoes without pruning but if you look at the features of the plant, you'll find that the plant is producing unnecessary leaves and twigs during the entire growing period. Following are the common reasons why you should prune your garden tomato plants-
- To remove excessive leaves and twigs
If you leave your plant to grow randomly, some of its branches will increase excessive leaves that'll grow on and on unnecessarily. Plants forcefully focus on these leaves instead of focusing much on the flowering branches.
Also, these leaves and twigs grow in the bottom section and besides the main branches of the plant. Pruning is very helpful to remove these leaves and twigs and improve plant focus.
- To encourage flowering and tomato growth
Each tomato plant produces primary and secondary twigs on the plant. Having a single strong stem, each plant has multiple strong branches that grow on a certain gap and are the biggest ones on the plant.
Apart from these, secondary twigs grow near these big branches with time. The plant treats these small twigs as secondary to focus on the main branches. Therefore, tomatoes grow on these leaves but very late and very few. Also, plants share unnecessary energy on these leaves throughout the main flowering and tomato production.
To avoid this thing, we focus only on the main branches and prune the secondary twigs to encourage overall flowering and tomato growth.
When to prune Tomato plants
Some people say the best time to prune a tomato plant is when the plant start flowering and some say when the plant becomes established with roots.
I think a bit differently because in both cases, new twigs will start to continue to grow further even if you cut them.
So the better way to prune a tomato plant is just before flowering till the flowering start on each branch. Pruning in the right range is more effective than a prune at a fixed time. The best daytime to prune tomato plants is morning when sunlight just starts to enter your garden and the temperature remains low.
Method of pruning Tomato plants
Step 1- Inspect and identify the excessive leaves
First, inspect your plant from top to bottom and all around the plant. If you're doing pruning at the right time, you will clearly see the secondary leaves beside every main branch of the plant. Identify all these leaves on your each tomato garden plants.
Step 2- Be gentle with flowering branches
I want to aware you while pruning the tomato plants that these plants don't have enough strength to face rough pruning or carelessness. So be gentle while pruning every single excessive leave.
Step 3- Cut the secondary excessive leaves
Finally, start to cut the identified leaves from the mid-sections first. Each main branch commonly has one or two extra twigs so prune one by one from each branch carefully and gently.
Step 4- Cut the bottom excessive leaves
Now, remove the bottom leaves and twigs that are very small and separate from the main branches. These branches are developing branches that will take too long and produce very less. So remove them in your next step.
Step 5- Provide support stand to your plant
After pruning all your garden tomato plants, you should provide them with stand support to handle the weight of tomatoes. For that, you can fix a strong wooden piece taller than the height of the plant. Dig into the container or garden soil and place carefully near the plant. You can use smooth thread to bind the plant stem with this stand support and your plant will easily handle the overall weight of the tomatoes.
